Scienter (Coordinator)
SCIENTER is a non-profit research centre and service provider organisation, active in the field of education and training. Currently it employees 28 people, full-time equivalent.

SCIENTER is interested in innovation of training systems, with main reference to the field of open and distance learning and organisational learning. It develops research projects at regional, national, and European level in the following areas: training needs analysis; design and development of open and flexible learning systems; organisational learning design and implementation; training of trainers for the use of new methodologies and innovative tools; research and selection of learning materials; market analysis in education and training, particularly concerning the use of new technologies and ODL. As to current and prior involvement in SOCRATES and other EU activities worth to be mentioned: ODL Policy Seminar; Humanities (collaboration among conventional Universities on ODL); OLPASS (Transnational mobilities of ODL materials); TRENDS (In-service Teachers Training in the use of ICT); MENON (Multimedia Support Network in ESPRIT; co-ordination of the MESO "Multimedia Educational Software Observatory" project.

FIM-Psychologie - Friedrich Alexander Universität Erlangen - Nürnberg
FIM is a Research & Development unit, founded in 1975, at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, Institut für Psychologies I, with wide spread experiences in the development and evaluation of advanced multimedia open learning systems.

It Employed about 30 full time equivalents.

FIM-Psychologie started in joined European projects 1986 with a contribution to DELTA Initial studies. FIM was main contractor of a COMETT project; carries out and prepares projects on health education; and maintains and enlarges a large modular multimedia system on basics in psychology. FIM is equipped with in-house low cost facilities of high level DPT including pictures and graphic processing, print, audio, and video registration, editing and duplication on broadcast standard, telecom use via satellite and networks, automatized mailing, all tailored to the specific needs for advanced educational use. It operates a cluster of INTERNET hosts including Web servers, using highband with multimedia capable fibber connections, with 30 ISDN B channels. INTERNET use experiences for education and training search back to 1988.

LAMBRAKIS RESEARCH FOUNDATION
The Lambrakis Research Foundation (LRF) is a non-profit, public-interest, private institution, founded in Athens on 1991. It employes 20 persons in total and 6 in ODL.

The Foundation serves the public by undertaking projects in various high-priority sectors of special interest to Greece such as Education, Culture, the Environment, and regional development within the framework of the European Union. It is concerned with disseminating information to promote an increasing awareness of cultural, educational, environmental and other important social issues, as well as to create new and more rewarding opportunities for the youth - in close collaboration with the public administration (ministries, municipalities, etc. The LRF gives high priority to educational technology in various fields, such as the production of educational software and the application of multimedia (CD-ROM titles) in Education, teacher's training etc. Its ultimate scope is to contribute to each and every worthwhile attempt to ensure better and more effective educational practices in both a Greek and an international context. The LRF participates also in a number of European RTD (4th Framework) projects. Of particular importance are LRF's role as Coordinator of the TELEMATICS Project "TRENDS" which provides in-service, distance training to 2,400 teachers, in 6 European countries, on the use of IT in learning, as well as its participation in the ESPRIT Project "M-CUBE", which started in the summer of 1996 with the mandate to develop a Multimedia Support Network to facilitate the European cultural multimedia industry (focusing in the Mediterranean basin). The LRF is also the coordinator of the MENON Network Project (ESPRIT Project 24294).

Finally, LRF participates in the "Caliber-Net" project for the development of quality guidelines in ODL

Associazione CAMPO
CAMPO is the Italian Association for the development of Open and Distance Learning, grouping the main Italian actors interested in this field from the two University Consortia: CUD and NETTUNO to the main hardware and Telecom companies, from research centres to producers of ODL materials, from individual universities to major training bodies and regional UETP's. It was established in 1990 and since then it has worked on observation, animation, training of trainers, policy advice both at national and European level.

It is the contractor of the PALIO Project (European Qualification for the Design, Management and Evaluation of Open Learning Systems) in COMETT II and for two major distance learning TEMPUS projects in Hungary and Bulgaria. It has bilateral agreements with other national associations of open and distance learning bodies and consolidated experience in network animation and project management.

The Association has recently activated a Working Group on Quality issues of ODL activities which will take part in the project.

EUROPEAN DISTANCE EDUCATION NETWORK
The aim of the European Distance Education Network is to foster the development of Open and Distance Learning through the provision of a platform for co-operation and collaboration between a wide range of institutions, networks, and other agencies concerned with distance education in Europe. EDEN aims at strengthening ties with non-EU associations and institutions in close co-operation with the International Council for Distance Education (ICDE).

Its main activities concern especially: support and organisation of conferences, seminars and staff training initiatives; information providing about current developments in distance education; assistance in the development and strengthening of regional and national distance education networks, programmes and initiatives in Europe; encouragement to the development of research in distance education.

COIMBRA GROUP
The Coimbra Group is a non-profit organisation created in 1985 and based in Brussels. Since two years it is actively involved in ODL initiatives (HUMANITIES, HUMANITIES 2, VIRTUE). It is an integrated network of European universities (34 traditional and mostly old European universities) the aim of which is the creation of special academic and cultural ties and the creation and advancement of facilities and privileged channels of information and exchange. Since 1985, the CG developed a strong and close co-operation with the Latin-American universities, East and Western universities, Mediterranean universities under the framework of several EU programmes as ALFA, TEMPUS, TACIS, MED CAMPUS. Last but not least, the CG is focusing on European networking and has developed projects under the framework of ERASMUS in the beginning and the new European mobility programmes such as SOCRATES, LEONARDO, 3rd and 4th Framework Programmes.

EUROPACE 2000
EuroPACE 2000 is an International non-profit organisation according to Belgian Law, which is aiming at the development of networked, telematics supported education within traditional universities and their industrial and societal partners in Europe.

EuroPACE 2000 has 60 members, 45 of which are traditional universities. The headquarters is employing currently the equivalent of 8 full-time people, all directly involved in ODL

EADTU
The European Association of Distance Teaching Universities - eadtu - is a strategic level organisation whose European activities and projects support and advance goals towards achieving its mission: to promote and support the creation of a European network for higher level distance education. EADTU was established in January 1987 by the principals of Europe's major distance teaching institutions to foster co-operation between European organisations dedicated to higher education through distance teaching methodology. eadtu is comprised of 18 national members from 14 countries collectively, providing distance education programmes to over 900,000 students. All members of the association are non-profit institutions. More than 4,000 academic staff are directly involved in the development and delivery of courses through 875 study centres, 55 of which are Euro-StudyCentres. Already eadtu membership includes 150 conventional universities utilising distance learning through dual mode.

A number of eadtu activities are, and have been supported by the European Commission programmes; erasmus, comett, delta, phare, etc. At the moment, within the framework of ten- telecom, a project called wire about the use of isdn technologies is co-ordinated by the eadtu. Other projects that eadtu is involved in at the moment are: dune, a Thematic network to study obstacles in the delivery of Distance Education and find solutions to overcome those obstacles; caliber-net; in the framework of odl in socrates to investigate issues in relation to the quality of Open and Distance Learning in Europe.

TECHNOLOGIES FOR TRAINING
Type of organisation: Company limited by guarantee (means 'not-for-profit'), created in 1996 by a Consortium of private companies to undertake a contract from the UK Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) for the establishment and operation of an information and advice service on the use of technology in training; and also other activities relating to technology, training and Open Learning. Activities include establishing a network of Information Points and Demonstration Centres, supporting the network with centrally produced support material and other services (including marketing to end users); other activities include a www site, an observatory function, influencing publishers and the training of trainers; providing advice to DfEE.

TfT Ltd itself has no employees. The Consortium members vary in size from one person to over 400. In the Consortium as a whole it is estimated that about 15 full-time equivalents are involved in ODL, including multimedia and the provision of information and advice.

TfT Ltd has been involved in the SOCRATES CALIBER-NET project. Various partners have had considerable experience in their own right in LEONARDO projects.
